(17th January 2017, Hong Kong) Former Vice Foreign Minister Mr. He Yafei spoke on China’s foreign policy at the time of global change at the second forum of the “Learn about China, Understand the Nation and Care for Hong Kong” series, organised by China Institute of Our Hong Kong Foundation earlier today. Mr. He Yafei believes the world will see the advent of a new era of “Re-Globalization” with China playing a leadership role of key importance.

Mr. He commented that globalisation has entered a new era, and that China will play a pivotal and leading role in the process. He also pinpointed that the norm of “deglobalisation” and anti-globalisation” has been rooted in the cause of global governance being lagging behind the globalisation development.

China, meanwhile, has continued to participate to promote the international affairs. In particular, the 2016 G20 Hangzhou Summited hosted by China had concluded 29 achievements, which significantly boosted China’s influence and positive impact on global governance. It also showcased China’s rising status in the world stage, positioning the nation as the forerunner of globalisation and global governance.

Mr. He further pointed out that in face of the complex global landscape, the win-win spirit of co-operation advocated by China will be a leading force to the world. The “One Belt, One Road” policy offers an innovative global governance model, that signifies a “global public good” concept and win-win objectives between China and its global partners that are cross-regional, cross-border and cross-ideological.

In regards to the Sino-US relations, Mr. He commented that Sino-US relation is the cornerstone of international security. Mr. He suggested that China and the United States make the best use of the time to study closely what direction the bilateral relation will head to, while Trump is currently building his team of administration. A cooperative and conflict-proof relation between the two countries will be critical and further benefit international law and order, as well as global governance. In regard of this, Hong Kong, acting as a “super-connector”, can contribute a lot to China for outreaching the outside world.

Mrs. Eva Cheng, Executive Director of Our Hong Kong Foundation remarked, “We are deeply honoured to have invited Mr. He Yafei to share his views and enlighten us on China’s efforts in global governance and the nation’s foreign strategic policy in this new era. By providing the series of talks, we aim to enhance and broaden Hong Kong people’s understanding of our nation. We will continue to invite experts from different fields to share their views of China’s new developments with the local community.”
