Jean Woo: Pleasant Living Environment Supports Healthy Ageing

12 Apr 2025 (Sat)

Our Hong Kong Foundation launched its research report titled "Policy Path to Ageing in Place for Hong Kong: Shaping an Inclusive Housing and Community Landscape" on 10 Apr. In recent years, senior living has become a significant topic in Hong Kong due to the city's rapidly ageing population. Projections suggest that by 2046, over 65s will make up 36% of the population, with a significant majority (over 80%) preferring to age in place. However, Hong Kong's elderly care resources still lean towards institutional care, and support for ageing in place needs to be improved.

Professor Jean Woo, Director of the Jockey Club Institute of Ageing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, noted that Hong Kong people are among the longest-living in the world, with an increasing trend, and urged policies to address population ageing and build an age-friendly city.

She regarded optimising the living environments as key to supporting seniors’ physical and mental health and independence.
