The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Forum 2024: Hong Kong’s Role in the New Era

(6 November, 2024, Hong Kong) “The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Forum 2024: Hong Kong’s Role in the New Era” was presented by The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong 90th Anniversary. The signature forum was co-organised by Our Hong Kong Foundation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shenzhen Finance Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance. It gathered heavyweight speakers of government officials, C-suite leaders, business strategists, innovation and AI gurus, sustainability experts and academicians to explore the vast opportunities presented by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), with a focus on Hong Kong’s unique strength in bridging China and the global market and fostering cooperation and acceleration of high-quality development across the GBA.

OHKF was honoured to have the gracious presence of six officiating guests:  Professor Wang Cong, Associate Vice President, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Dr Jane Lee, President of Our Hong Kong Foundation, extended a welcome to the 800 attendees on behalf of the organisers; followed by  Dr Bernard Chan, Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of the HKSAR; Mr ZHU Wei, Deputy Director of Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Executive Deputy Director of Guangdong Provincial Greater Bay Area; Dr Jonathan Choi, Chairman of Sunwah Group and Chairman of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance; and Dr Wingco Lo, President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, delivered the opening remarks.

The warm welcome opened the forum consisting of two Keynote Addresses, two Introductory Remarks and four Industry Insights.

The first Keynote Address started the morning session, “Finding New Paths Amidst Challenges to Enhance Business Competitiveness”. It explored Hong Kong’s pivotal role as China’s most internationalised city and how companies can capitalise on its strong links with ASEAN and other Asian markets to enhance their competitiveness. The session featured two keynote speakers, Mr Marcus Spurrell, CEO of International Business of DMALL, and Dr Brian GU, Vice Chairman and President of XPENG. They were then joined by  Mr Antony Leung, Group Chairman of Nan Fung Group and Group Chairman & Co-Founder of New Frontier Group, and the session’s chair, Dr Stephen Wong, Head of Chief Executive's Policy Unit of the HKSAR Government for a dialogue session.

The second Keynote Address was conducted in the afternoon. Themed, “GBA and Hong Kong: Advancing Global Competitiveness of Mainland Industries”, the session concentrated on fortifying supply chains, integrating automotive breakthroughs, and expanding digital infrastructure to boost the global standing of Mainland China’s industries and creating new growth opportunities in the GBA. The Keynote Address was delivered by The Hon Sunny TAN, Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council. Ms Irina Fan, Director of Research at Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Professor Geng Xiao, Associate Dean of the School of Public Policy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Chairman of the Hong Kong Institution for International Finance, joined him on stage as guest speaker and session chair respectively.

 Two Introductory Remarks were respectively delivered by Mr Guan Xiangming, Leading Party member and Secretary-General of Guangdong Federation of Industry and Commerce, and Professor Xufei MA, Associate Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School, to introduce the four Industry Insights.

Two of the Industry Insights were conducted in the morning module. The first Industry Insights, “Financial Industries in the GBA: Cross-Border Collaboration and Global Opportunities”, explored how financial enterprises can leverage innovative financial connectivity mechanisms and policy measures within the GBA to enhance regional cooperation, expand their global reach and solidify the GBA’s position as a key player. The keynote speaker was Mr Grant PAN, CFO of Noah Group and CEO of Noah Hong Kong. Mr Eric Ho, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Dah Sing Bank (China) Limited, Ms Winnie Wong, CEO & Executive Director of Asia Insurance Company Limited, and the session host, Professor Jian Wang, Associate Director of Shenzhen Finance Institute and Director of FEMBA Programme, SFI, then joined him at a dialogue session.

The second Industry Insight, “Artificial Intelligence and High-End Manufacturing in the GBA: Strategic Visions for a Tech-Driven Future”, discussed the need to explore strategic visions to leverage Hong Kong’s strengths in basic research, intellectual property protection framework to build an integrated innovation and technology chain. Led by two keynote speakers, Mr Nixon Chau, former Managing Director and General Manager of SenseTime, and Professor Zexiang Li, Professor of Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Founder of XbotPark, and Founder of Shenzhen InnoX Academy; Mr Lewis CHAN, CEO of Xsight, and Mr Ka Mun Chang, Managing Director of Li & Fung Development (China) Ltd, joined the conversations with the session’s host, Mr Robert Lok, Vice President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong.

The third Industry Insights session, “Green Economy in the GBA: Pathways to Sustainable Growth”, commenced in the afternoon. It concentrated on how companies can leverage Hong Kong’s expertise in green finance and the adoption of international standards, combined with Mainland China’s advancements in greener production lines and manufacturing capabilities, to drive sustainable growth and position themselves at the forefront of Asia’s green economy. Featuring Ms Poman Lo, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Regal Hotels International Holdings Limited, Founding Managing Partner of AlphaTrio Capital, and Mr Chavalit TSAO, Chairman of TPC (Tsao Pao Chee), Founder of OCTAVE, Chairman of Council of Wisdom, Family Business Network International (FBNI), as keynote speakers. The two guests were then joined by Dr Kang Qu, Managing Director of Sustainability Strategy at Bank of China (Hong Kong) and Vice President of the Hong Kong Green Finance Association, and Mr Pat Woo, Partner and Head of ESG – Hong Kong, KPMG China, at the dialogue session, moderated by Professor Christine Loh, Chief Development Strategist at the Institute for the Environment of HKUST.  

The final panel, themed “Digital Assets in the GBA: Shaping the Future Digital Economy”, was opened by Mr Evan Auyang, Group President of Animoca Brands and Mr Yifan He, CEO of Red Date (Hong Kong) Technology Limited. The session explored how businesses can leverage digital assets to innovate business models, enhance cross-border collaboration, and access emerging markets such as next-generation digital platforms. By integrating these technologies into corporate practices and capitalising on Hong Kong’s robust digital infrastructure and financial expertise, companies can lead the way in the evolving “Digital Bay Area”. After the keynotes, Ms Vivien Khoo, CEO & Managing Director of the Private Wealth Management Association, Ms Sandy PENG, Co-Founder of Scroll joined the two speakers on stage to start a dialogue session, with Mr. Victor Yim, Head of Fintech at Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited as the session chair.

The forum was closed by Professor Wei Xiong, Academic Dean of the School of Management and Economics, and Shenzhen Finance Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Mr Ryan Ip, OHKF Vice President cum Co-head of Research.

Dr Jane LEE, President of Our Hong Kong Foundation, stated that the forum brings together entrepreneurs and experts to explore the opportunities and challenges of the GBA, highlighting Hong Kong’s role as a bridge between China and the global market. She added that it aims to providing an opportunity for knowledge sharing and collaboration, with the objective to foster cooperation and accelerate high-quality development across the GBA.
Professor Cong WANG, Associate Vice President, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, said that as an international, financial, shipping, and trade center,Hong Kong’s competitive edge includes its Chinese and Western systems, culture, and talents. Through providing substantial support to the GBA with financial and technological innovation and talents development, it plays an irreplaceable bilateral role in facilitating the country's opening up measures.
Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, the Government of the HKSAR, said, “With our friendly business environment, our low and simple tax regime, as well as wealth of multi-cultural talents and professional services, together with many distinguished advantages under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’, we are well positioned to connect local, mainland and foreign businesses.” He added, “With concerted effort, I’m sure we’ll continue to enhance and empower the GBA, in particular, deepening its trade and investment network and facilitating its further opening up to the world. Together, we will seize the amazing opportunities ahead.”
Mr ZHU Wei, Deputy Director of Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Standing Deputy Director of the Leading Group Office of Guangdong on the Construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, said that activities between three cities are more streamlined. Facilitated by the Individual Visit Scheme and low-altitude economy, people who work in the GBA could a embrace better quality of life. The GBA development spectrum is wide, together, we could seize the opportunities and create a bright future.
Dr Jonathan CHOI, Standing Committee Member of the CPPCC, Chairman of Sunwah Group and Chairman of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance, said, “The process of developing the GBA, in addition to the advantage of “One Country, Two Systems”, Hong Kong possesses talents, a culture of East-meet-west, a sophisticated legal framework and connection to the world. Hong Kong people can leverage its intelligence and create a better future for Hong Kong and the GBA in the process of integrating into the National Development.”
Dr Wingco LO, President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, said that the Central Government wishes to see the GBA as the driving force for high-quality development and accelerating the high-quality productive force, so as to set a clear road map for Hong Kong’s future.
Dr Brian GU, Vice Chairman and President of XPENG, “The GBA is one of the biggest markets which has a great scale. There are essential opportunities, biggest talent base. A lot of organisations providing number of talent. It also has a positive business environment. Hong Kong have a support to their international logistic and financing which is a strong and healthy eco-system.”
Mr Marcus SPURRELL, CEO of International Business of DMALL, shared that many companies choose Hong Kong as a springboard to go to the world.
Mr Grant PAN, CFO of Noah Group and CEO of Noah Hong Kong, said that investor transformation towards professional and rational investors has created the present need for financial institutions to offer products and services that are not only in line with the regions’ evolving needs but also addressing the existing gaps in the market.
Mr Nixon CHAU, Former Managing Director and General Manager of SenseTime, said that it is important to nurture innovation, which involves investment in research and development, as well as collaborations with academic and research institutions. By doing so, we could stay at the technological forefront.
Professor Zexiang LI, Professor of Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering of HKUST, Founder of XbotPark, Founder of ShenZhen InnoX Academy, shared his insights from new engineering education to start-ups, and on how to build an end-to-end efficient ecosystem.
Prof Xufei MA, Associate Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School shared that China progress towards peaking the carbon emission by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Corporation in the GBA area aunicaly position to lead to the green transformation.
Hon Sunny TAN, Chairman of HKPC, said that Hong Kong should continue to strengthen its advantages as a gateway to the Mainland with international connectivity, as it strives to become the Global Supply Chain Management Centre. This would help the country attract more top-notch enterprises and talent, and support Mainland enterprises to tap into overseas markets. By leveraging New Productive Forces, Hong Kong can contribute to the nation’s high-quality development while promoting upgrades in innovation, industrial, and value chains. He also encouraged enterprises from both Hong Kong and the Mainland to capitalise on Hong Kong’s unique advantages to “set sail” to boost global market competitiveness with concerted efforts. Thus, they can seize new opportunities in ASEAN countries and Belt and Road regions, thereby continuously enhancing international competitiveness.

By promoting cross-border collaboration and leveraging our unique advantages, Hong Kong can lead initiatives that propel the GBA toward becoming a powerful engine for sustainable growth across Asia, ultimately uniting the whole world and influencing the global journey toward a net-zero future.”
Mr Chavalit TSAO, Chairman of TPC (Tsao Pao Chee), Founder of OCTAVE, Chairman of Council of Wisdom, Family Business Network International (FBNI) “Entrepreneurs are the foundation of the market economy. We must fulfill our roles with sincerity and integrity, unite knowledge with action, and work together for a shared future for humanity.”
Mr Evan Auyang, Group President of Animoca Brands, shared his views on the critical role of digital assets and blockchain technology in shaping the future global financial system. He emphasized that, as a leading global financial hub, Hong Kong must re-double its efforts on the development of resilient and decentralized financial infrastructures where the city can credibly take a leading role. This strategic focus is vital in strengthening the city's ability to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape and safeguard its leadership as a global financial center.
Mr Yifan HE, CEO of Red Date (Hong Kong) Technology Limited highlighted the importance of protecting the privacy and data crossing the border between two different legal systems.
Prof Wei XIONG, Academic Dean of the School of Management and Economics, and Shenzhen Finance Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, shared that GBA as always been held to high expectation. As an international city in China, Hong Kong possess unique advantages in finance, technological innovation, talent gathering and globalisation. He believes it will surely inject real momentum into the development of the GBA and to facilitate its internationalisation.”
Mr Ryan IP, Vice President of Our Hong Kong Foundation cum Co-Head of Public Policy Institute concluded that we have seen a clear consensus on the immense potential of the GBA. Particularly in leveraging Hong Kong’s unique position as a bridge between China and the global market. The collaborative spirit demonstrated throughout the forum underscores the importance of partnerships and knowledge sharing in unlocking the full potential of the GBA.

Dr Jonathan CHOI, Standing Committee Member of the CPPCC, Chairman of Sunwah Group and Chairman of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance, said, “The process of developing the GBA, in addition to the advantage of “One Country, Two Systems”, Hong Kong possesses talents, a culture of East-meet-west, a sophisticated legal framework and connection to the world. Hong Kong people can leverage its intelligence and create a better future for Hong Kong and the GBA in the process of integrating into the National Development.”
Dr Wingco LO, President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, said that the Central Government wishes to see the GBA as the driving force for high-quality development and accelerating the high-quality productive force, so as to set a clear road map for Hong Kong’s future.
Dr Brian GU, Vice Chairman and President of XPENG, “The GBA is one of the biggest markets which has a great scale. There are essential opportunities, biggest talent base. A lot of organisations providing number of talent. It also has a positive business environment. Hong Kong have a support to their international logistic and financing which is a strong and healthy eco-system.”
Mr Marcus SPURRELL, CEO of International Business of DMALL, shared that many companies choose Hong Kong as a springboard to go to the world.
Mr Grant PAN, CFO of Noah Group and CEO of Noah Hong Kong, said that investor transformation towards professional and rational investors has created the present need for financial institutions to offer products and services that are not only in line with the regions’ evolving needs but also addressing the existing gaps in the market.
Mr Nixon CHAU, Former Managing Director and General Manager of SenseTime, said that it is important to nurture innovation, which involves investment in research and development, as well as collaborations with academic and research institutions. By doing so, we could stay at the technological forefront.
Professor Zexiang LI, Professor of Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering of HKUST, Founder of XbotPark, Founder of ShenZhen InnoX Academy, shared his insights from new engineering education to start-ups, and on how to build an end-to-end efficient ecosystem.
Prof Xufei MA, Associate Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School shared that China progress towards peaking the carbon emission by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Corporation in the GBA area aunicaly position to lead to the green transformation.
Hon Sunny TAN, Chairman of HKPC, said that Hong Kong should continue to strengthen its advantages as a gateway to the Mainland with international connectivity, as it strives to become the Global Supply Chain Management Centre. This would help the country attract more top-notch enterprises and talent, and support Mainland enterprises to tap into overseas markets. By leveraging New Productive Forces, Hong Kong can contribute to the nation’s high-quality development while promoting upgrades in innovation, industrial, and value chains. He also encouraged enterprises from both Hong Kong and the Mainland to capitalise on Hong Kong’s unique advantages to “set sail” to boost global market competitiveness with concerted efforts. Thus, they can seize new opportunities in ASEAN countries and Belt and Road regions, thereby continuously enhancing international competitiveness.
Ms Poman LO, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Regal Hotels International Holdings Limited, Founding Managing Partner of AlphaTrio Capital “Hong Kong stands at a pivotal crossroads within the GBA, poised to play a strategic role as a global green finance and tech hub. By promoting cross-border collaboration and leveraging our unique advantages, Hong Kong can lead initiatives that propel the GBA toward becoming a powerful engine for sustainable growth across Asia, ultimately uniting the whole world and influencing the global journey toward a net-zero future.”
Mr Chavalit TSAO, Chairman of TPC (Tsao Pao Chee), Founder of OCTAVE, Chairman of Council of Wisdom, Family Business Network International (FBNI) “Entrepreneurs are the foundation of the market economy. We must fulfill our roles with sincerity and integrity, unite knowledge with action, and work together for a shared future for humanity.”
Mr Evan Auyang, Group President of Animoca Brands, shared his views on the critical role of digital assets and blockchain technology in shaping the future global financial system. He emphasized that, as a leading global financial hub, Hong Kong must re-double its efforts on the development of resilient and decentralized financial infrastructures where the city can credibly take a leading role. This strategic focus is vital in strengthening the city's ability to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape and safeguard its leadership as a global financial center.
Mr Yifan HE, CEO of Red Date (Hong Kong) Technology Limited highlighted the importance of protecting the privacy and data crossing the border between two different legal systems.
Prof Wei XIONG, Academic Dean of the School of Management and Economics, and Shenzhen Finance Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, shared that GBA as always been held to high expectation. As an international city in China, Hong Kong possess unique advantages in finance, technological innovation, talent gathering and globalisation. He believes it will surely inject real momentum into the development of the GBA and to facilitate its internationalisation.”
Mr Ryan IP, Vice President of Our Hong Kong Foundation cum Co-Head of Public Policy Institute concluded that we have seen a clear consensus on the immense potential of the GBA. Particularly in leveraging Hong Kong’s unique position as a bridge between China and the global market. The collaborative spirit demonstrated throughout the forum underscores the importance of partnerships and knowledge sharing in unlocking the full potential of the GBA.
