Dr Frank TONG

Frank Tong is Managing Partner of QBN Capital, with a career spanning technology and product development as well as corporate management. He has held senior executive roles at HSBC, ASTRI, Hisense, and SAE Magnetics (a TDK subsidiary), and currently advises the engineering faculties of HKUST and CUHK; he was named an Honorary Fellow of HKUST in 2025 and has served as an Adjunct Professor at CUHK since 2004.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Frank studied at La Salle College before earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. After completing his PhD at Columbia University, with thesis work at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, he joined IBM Research to work on photonics. He later became a professor at CUHK. In 2004, an ASTRI project he led was acquired by SAE, after which he headed its optical business unit. He then joined Hisense, served as CEO of ASTRI, and ultimately became Global Head of Innovation and Strategic Investment (CVC) at HSBC.
He has extensive cross-cultural experience across North America, Europe, and Mainland China, and serves as chairman of the Tong’s Charity Foundation.
