Mr Daryl NG Win-kong

Mr Daryl Ng Win-kong, SBS, JP, is Chairman of Sino Group.  Sino Group comprises three listed companies, namely Sino Land Company Limited (HKSE: 083), Tsim Sha Tsui Properties Limited (HKSE: 0247) and Sino Hotels (Holdings) Limited (HKSE: 1221) of Sino Group, as well as private companies held by the Ng Family.

Mr Ng champions sustainability and drives integration into the Group’s business and operations.  He chairs the ESG Steering Committee (formerly the Sustainability Committee), which he established in 2010.  He is deeply involved in important schemes such as decarbonisation, carbon neutrality, deployment of renewable energy, plastic reduction, diversity and inclusion.

Mr Ng is a steadfast advocate of sustainable development of the community. He has been driving and actively participating in youth development, volunteering, green initiatives, innovation, heritage conservation, as well as arts and cultural projects to build a better community.

He spearheaded the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, launched in 2013 in collaboration with South China Morning Post, and serves on the judging panel of the annual award, which celebrates Hong Kong’s unsung heroes who have made a positive impact on others and inspired many.

To better support the community and worthy causes promoting positivity, he has founded the Hong Kong Community Foundation.  It has supported medical practitioners in combating COVID-19 with donation of essential supplies, and has worked on meaningful initiatives such as #ClapforHK, #ShareASmile and publication of Chinese Stories and The Story of the Sand and Sea People.

Mr Daryl Ng has established the Hong Kong-ASEAN Foundation, a platform promoting and deepening ties between Hong Kong and the ASEAN to reinforce Hong Kong’s international position and support future growth.  The Foundation facilitates exchanges between ASEAN and China through Hong Kong on areas encompassing arts and culture, ESG, innovation, education, trades while seeking to co-create solutions.

Youth Development

Mr Ng is enthusiastic about supporting the youth, and has initiated an array of undertakings conducive to youth development such as Go Code, Sino Junior Reporter Programme, Hospitality Young Leaders Programme to empower the young generations with essential skills.

He initiated the Go Code project in 2014, a meaningful undertaking that provides complimentary coding classes to equip students from underprivileged families with the essential skill.  Over 5,000 primary 4-6 pupils have benefited from the programme.  The curriculum has been expanded to cover subjects like robotics and circuiting.

Keen to support Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology hub, Mr Ng has founded the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation, a holistic innovation ecosystem encompassing a wide range of platforms to serve different age groups and sectors.  For instance, Go Code project provides complimentary coding classes for primary school students, and OC STEM Lab at Olympian City provides exposure to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), Sino Inno Lab supports start-ups and technology companies by providing a sandbox platform and facilitating co-creation. He also directs investments in innovation and technology projects.

Mr Ng encourages proprietary innovations, notable examples of which include the patented and award-winning City Air Purification System (CAPS), the novel in-building hydropower system that generates electricity with unused waterhead in pipes and purification of food waste filtrate with micro-algae. The second generation of CAPS received Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2019 and Green Good Design Award in 2021.

He encourages collaborations with universities, such as the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition and HKU DreamCatchers to foster next-generation innovative solutions, the Sino Group Robotic Architecture Series with the HKU to experiment robotic architecture.

Keen to foster creativity in young minds and helping Hong Kong to groom the next generation of scientists and inventors, Mr Ng has initiated the Hong Kong Science Fair for primary and secondary students to showcase their inventions.  The visionary initiative has attracted 400 applications each year since its inauguration in 2022.

Heritage and Culture

In 2008, the Ng Family set up the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation (HCF) to revitalise buildings and promote the appreciation of heritage conservation. Tai O Heritage Hotel, converted from the Old Tai O Police Station, a Grade II historic building completed in 1902, through Batch I of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme of the Development Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), was opened in March 2012.

Mr Ng strongly believes in engaging the community in heritage conservation.  As a member of the Tai O community, Tai O Heritage Hotel builds close connections with the neighbourhood, and contributes to the sustainable development of the local economy through the provision of employment opportunities, engagement of local service providers, use of local culinary specialities and provision of complimentary daily docent tours to experience the unique local culture.  Tai O Heritage Hotel has participated in more than 100 traditional festivities, cultural activities and community services while more than half of its workforce comes from Tai O or Lantau.

Since opening, the hotel has welcomed more than 2 million visitors from Hong Kong and around the world, and has received over 30 international and local accolades in recognition of its devotion to heritage conservation and engagement of the community.  Notable example includes the Award of Merit at the 2013 Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation organised by the UNESCO, becoming Hong Kong’s UNESCO-awarded hotel.

His other cultural heritage projects include the restoration of the Great Wall and Yanxi Gong (Palace of Prolonging Happiness) in Beijing, The Fullerton Heritage in Singapore and The Fullerton Hotel Sydney in Australia.

The Ng Family set up the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’) in 2010 in memory of the late founder of Sino Group, Mr Ng Teng Fong. The NTFCF has donated to over 300 local non-governmental organisations, universities and social enterprises.  The NTFCF established the Ng Teng Fong Scholarships in 2015 to support outstanding secondary and university students in Hong Kong and Mainland China in their pursuit of study; more than 8,600 students have received scholarships in ten years.

The HKSAR Government awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star to him in 2021 in recognition of his contributions to the community, in particular his work on heritage in Tai O and overseas. He received the Jinghua Award from the Beijing Municipal Government in 2020 for his contributions to international cooperations and development of Beijing as a world-class city. He was honoured with the Insignia of Knight in the National Order of Merit by the French Government in 2021 in recognition of his contributions to heritage conservation and youth development.
