Professor WONG Suk-ying

Professor Wong Suk Ying received her undergraduate training at the University of Liverpool and earned her PhD from Stanford University. Prior to joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1997, she held faculty positions at various higher education institutions in the United States and Japan.

Her primary research interests encompass the sociology of education, organizational studies, and higher education, supported by research grants funded by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council (RGC), and the Bilateral Hong Kong RGC-UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). In recognition of her excellence in teaching, Professor Wong was honored with the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award in 2005.

In addition to her distinguished achievements in research and pedagogy, Professor Wong has extensive experience in university administration. Formerly, she served as Associate Dean (Student Affairs) for the Faculty of Social Science and as University Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. From 2016 to 2022, she led initiatives related to student recruitment, internationalization, academic partnerships, and engagement with China in her capacity as Associate Vice President of CUHK. Since 2021, she has held concurrent appointments as Master of CW Chu College and as Professor in the Department of Sociology at CUHK.

Professor Wong is also deeply committed to community service. She currently serves as Executive Director (Scholarship) for the Tung & Ngai Education Foundation, a Council member of Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, and a member of the Research Council of Our Hong Kong Foundation. Her past roles include committee membership on the Appeal Review Committee of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and membership on the Joint Committee on Student Finance, Working Family, and Student Financial Assistance Agency. Additionally, she acted as an External Examiner for the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and served as a Subject Specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, as well as the former co-president of the Comparative Education Society of Asia.
