At the end of the 19th century, anti-Chinese sentiments were running high in the US and Canada, many overseas Chinese originally from Kaiping, returned to their hometowns and retire there. They brought western architectural styles and merged them with the local multi-storey watchtowers called “Diaolou” which served home security.
