改革開放之初，大量民工由農村湧到大城市，尋找工作機會，城中村成為他們的落腳點。隨著經濟發展，城市面貌更新，有些城中村被清拆，有些就保育下來。

近十年，內地「淘寶村」發展迅速，總數達五千多條，分佈在28個省市自治區，義烏和廣州是最集中的兩個城市。

位於浙江省的義烏國際商貿城，小商品琳琅滿目，如果在每間舖頭停留三分鐘，每天逛八個小時的話，要逛完這裡七萬多間商舖，都要超過一年。
