To Build Well-educated, Healthy Middle Class by Establishing Technology Industry in Hong Kong

Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) Insight Forum presented an inspiring forum, To Build Well-educated, Healthy Middle Class by Establishing Technology Industry in Hong Kong, featuring Guest of Honour, Group Chairman and CEO of DEFTA Partners Ambassador George Hara as Keynote Speaker; welcoming remarks by Dr Victor Fung, Chairman of Fung Investments, and closing remarks by Jane Lee, OHKF President.

The forum shed light on the vision of Public Interest Capitalism and its role in achieving long-term sustainability and attracted a full house of esteemed guests and C-Suite executives, including consul-generals, former government officials, chairmen, CEOs, and senior directors.

Dr Victor Fung stated that it was very important for us not to stop thinking in today's world. He continued that the big stakeholder for corporation was certainly shareholders but may not solely be shareholders. We, thus, needed to think about how we could make that a sustainable, long-term development.

In his keynote speech, Ambassador George Hara said, “Hong Kong’s prospects has been rooted from its trade, finance and tourism industries, but other cities are catching up. Through creation of technology-based industries, Hong Kong could remain its uniqueness.”

“By achieving Public Interest Capitalism and the creation of a well-educated middle class, we can make Hong Kong the model city for Asia in increasing company value and benefiting all members of corporation (including customers, employees, suppliers, community, earth, and shareholders) through adopting fair distribution and contributing the society,” Ambassador George Hara added.

At the dialogue session, the two speakers discussed ways to tackle the inequality of distribution of income at the heart of a capitalist, market-oriented system.

Dr Lee closed the Forum by expressing the importance of combining the characteristics of Western and Eastern to make the system work in harmony, build the future of the next generation, and benefit the interest of the public and the community.
